Tennessee Homeschool Graduation & Transcripts

Start your high-school plan with one question: who enrolls your student and issues the diploma? Independent homeschooling and church-related umbrella enrollment have different responsibilities. A tutor, curriculum subscription, or weekly co-op does not automatically provide an official transcript or diploma.

Who issues the homeschool diploma?

For independent homeschooling, the parent is responsible for the student's education and diploma. For a church-related umbrella arrangement, confirm the school's diploma, academic, and record-keeping policies before enrolling. Do not assume every umbrella serves grades 9–12 or offers graduation services.

An accredited online school is a separate school-enrollment path. Buying an online curriculum is not the same as enrolling in a school that issues transcripts and a diploma.

Graduation requirements depend on the enrollment path

Do not automatically apply Tennessee public-school graduation credit requirements to every homeschool family. Independent families should use current state homeschool guidance; church-related schools set their own academic and graduation policies within the applicable framework.

Graduating and qualifying for a particular college are different goals. Check prospective colleges' admission requirements early, including subjects, documentation, testing, and deadlines. Get the umbrella school's written course plan before paying for classes.

Build a transcript and keep supporting records

A useful transcript identifies the student, courses by school year, grades, credits, grading scale, and graduation date. Keep course descriptions and supporting work alongside it so another school or college can understand what was studied. This is a planning checklist, not a universal state transcript format.

For umbrella students, ask who prepares and sends the official transcript, how parent-reported grades are reviewed, and whether transcript requests cost extra. Keep copies of submitted attendance, grades, and course records.

  • Record course titles, materials used, and the school year completed.
  • Document how grades and credits were determined.
  • Keep separate records for outside classes and dual enrollment.
  • Confirm transcript delivery procedures with each receiving institution.

Transfer credits before changing programs

Before withdrawing or switching to an umbrella, send the receiving school your existing course and grade records. Ask which credits it accepts and what additional work is needed. Do not assume a course title guarantees credit transfer.

Returning to a public or private school can involve evaluation under that school's policies. Confirm placement and credit acceptance with the receiving school before changing enrollment, especially late in high school.

Plan college applications and dual enrollment

Check admission instructions directly with each college rather than relying on a single statewide checklist. Ask about homeschool transcripts, required subjects, test scores, official documents, and application deadlines.

For dual enrollment, ask the college about eligibility, course prerequisites, costs, and transcript records. Confirm how the course counts toward your homeschool or umbrella graduation plan; college enrollment does not by itself resolve high-school graduation requirements.

Before you commit

  • Identify who issues the diploma and official transcript.
  • Get written graduation and credit policies from your umbrella, if used.
  • Match the high-school plan to the student's post-graduation goals.
  • Keep course, grade, attendance, and outside-credit records.
  • Confirm transfer decisions before withdrawing.
  • Check each college's current admission and transcript instructions.

Common questions

Who issues an independent homeschool diploma in Tennessee?
The independent homeschool parent issues the diploma. An umbrella-school student should confirm the church-related school's diploma and graduation policies directly.
Must every Tennessee homeschool follow public-school graduation credits?
Do not assume public-school credit requirements apply to every homeschool path. Independent homeschooling and church-related enrollment have different responsibilities; verify state guidance and your school's policies.
Does a co-op issue a high-school transcript?
Not automatically. A supplemental co-op may report course grades without being the student's enrolling school. Ask who prepares the official transcript and issues the diploma.
Will homeschool credits transfer to another school?
The receiving school determines acceptance under its policies. Provide course and grade documentation and get a credit review before changing enrollment.
