What a hybrid school actually is
Hybrid schools — also called university-model or two-day schools — are the fastest-growing homeschool format in Tennessee's metro areas. Students attend a campus on set days for direct instruction, then complete assigned work at home on the alternate days with the parent acting as the at-home teacher or study coach.
Unlike a co-op, teachers are hired and paid, courses are graded, and the school issues report cards and, for upper grades, transcripts. Unlike a full-time private school, you keep two or three days a week of your own schedule and stay directly involved in the teaching.

Hybrid schools fit families who want academic accountability, real teachers for hard subjects, and a transcript they didn't have to build alone — while keeping a homeschool rhythm. They're a common landing place for families with a high schooler heading to college, or for parents who love homeschooling but don't want to teach chemistry or Latin.
They fit poorly if you want full curricular freedom (the school chooses the curriculum and the pace), if the at-home days can't be supervised because both parents work, or if the tuition doesn't fit your budget. Hybrids are the most structured middle option and the least flexible in what and when you teach.
What hybrid schools cost in Tennessee
Tuition typically runs about $3,000-$7,000 per student per year for a two- or three-day program, with elementary at the low end and high school at the top. Add registration and enrollment fees of roughly $150-$500, plus curriculum and book fees. Many programs offer multi-child discounts and payment plans.

How hybrid schools fit Tennessee homeschool law
Tennessee families homeschool one of three ways: registered independently with the local school district, enrolled through a church-related umbrella school, or enrolled in a registered non-public school (category I-IV). Which path you're on determines who keeps attendance and records — not the program you attend.
This is the question to ask on your tour, because hybrids differ. Some are registered non-public schools that enroll your student, keep attendance, and handle the record-keeping. Others are programs that serve homeschoolers who remain registered independently or under a church-related umbrella school. Both are legitimate; you just need to know which reporting responsibility is yours.
Funding: IEA and the Education Freedom Scholarship
Hybrid schools are the format most likely to interact with the Education Freedom Scholarship, which is worth roughly $7,000 per student per year and pays tuition at approved participating non-public schools. If a hybrid is a registered non-public school and has been approved to participate, EFS can apply to its tuition; if it operates as a program for homeschoolers, it cannot. Ask the school directly whether it is an EFS-participating school this year.
For a student with a qualifying disability and an active IEP, the IEA program may cover tuition and related services instead. The two programs cannot be used together, so compare them before applying.
Hybrid school, co-op, or microschool?
A co-op is parent-taught, once a week, and cheap. A hybrid is teacher-taught, two or three days, graded, and mid-priced. A microschool is a small full-week school with one teacher and a mixed-age group, priced closer to private school. Choose by how much of the teaching and accountability you want to hand off.
